We have always wanted to travel, but then again who doesn’t?!
A lot of people think a trip round the world is impossible unless you have a large sum of money. But really, it's all about will. If you really want to travel, you will do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. We started planning for this trip in 2006 and our goal was to make it happen in 2009. We had to come up with a strategy. We had to shift our lives completely and there was no way around it. We made a list of everything we could eliminate from our lives since simplifying our lifestyle was essential to making our dream come true. We started the process by moving to a smaller apartment, selling both cars and the precious Ducati. But that was only the beginning. Like most Americans, we were in credit card debt. We had a combined debt of roughly $30,000. We had to find a way to get out of debt all while saving money for the trip. This was not an easy task. Interest rates were not our friends. We managed to work it all out on a colorful spreadsheet (this was the only time we’ve ever loved a spreadsheet) and, somehow our plan to dig ourselves out of the hole worked. We made our last credit card payment two months before our trip date!
Two months away from the goal date, we started to sell our belongings. You name it, fridge, bed, dishes, flatware… we sold it! Thanks to our family, friends and craigslist they all went to good homes. And then it was time to turn in our letters of resignation. It wasn’t easy. Unemployment was close to its highest in California, the world was going through a recession, and here we were leaving our secure jobs. Most would say that we were crazy but we thought, "what better time!" We weren't just leaving our jobs, we were leaving our jobs to do something we love! All the while creating a job opportunity for someone in need.
We finally started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We started to book our trip, buy our gear, and pick our travel books. During the three years of planning, we thought a lot about the purpose of our trip and what we wanted out of it. It has always been something we both wanted to do, but what were we seeking? And we came up with this:
“Our overall goal is to connect with the world. We want to find a way to positively impact a person or a community and discover the humanitarian in us”.
Finally we were ready. We embarked on our round-the-world trip in May 2009.
